Original story (published on September 21, 2022) follows:
Using a Lightning Digital AV Adapter, iPhone users can mirror what is displayed on their device’s screen — apps, presentations, films, series, and videos — to their HDMI-equipped TV, projector, or other compatible displays.
This is done by connecting a Lightning Digital AV Adaptor to the Lightning port on your phone and then to a TV or projector via an HDMI cable.
iOS 16 update breaks HDMI functionality
However, some iPhone users say that after installing the iOS 16 update on their devices, it breaks the HDMI functionality for them (1,2,3,4,5).
Users claim that this issue arises when they connect their iPhone to a Lightning Digital AV adapter and mirror a video from a streaming platform to their TV.
In certain cases, users report that while the video playback appears to be okay, there is absolutely no audio output. However, when they disconnected the adapter from their iPhones, the audio can be heard.
Many iPhone users indicate that after installing the iOS 16 update, the HDMI functionality stopped working for them instantly even though it had been working properly before that.
Others report that they get no video output from streaming apps such as Netflix and Prime Video on their TVs (1,2,3).
Unfortunately, there is no official acknowledgment of this issue from the Apple team. Furthermore, we haven’t come across any workarounds as well.
Hopefully, Apple figures out why iPhone users are getting no audio or video when using the HDMI functionality and fixes the glitch at the earliest.
We will update this story as events unfold.
Update 1 (January 25, 2023)
