On Wednesday, the Tilak Marg police station in Delhi received a FIR against comedian Vir Das. Aditya Jha, an actor and comedian, has filed a complaint against him. The complaint accuses him of making derogatory remarks against the country at an American gathering. Vir discussed the country’s dual nature and some of the country’s most pressing issues, such as COVID19 lockdowns, rapes, and the crackdown on comedians, as well as farmer demonstrations.

An FIR has been filed against popular Indian stand-up comedian Vir Das in Delhi’s Tilak Marg police station after he received reaction for his recent video “Two Indias.” Aditya Jha, a Delhi resident, has filed a complaint alleging that the comedian-actor made indecent remarks about India at an event in America. Ashutosh Dubey, a Bombay High Court lawyer, has also filed a complaint with the Mumbai Police Department, seeking that Vir Das be prosecuted. For the uninitiated, Vir Das recently sparked a hornet’s nest by delivering a monologue about the country’s contradictions as part of the segment “I Come From Two Indias.”

Das discusses the country’s dualism in the six-minute film, as well as some of the most pressing concerns it faces, such as the fight against COVID-19, rape cases, comedian crackdowns, and farmer protests. His performance at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is captured in this video.

Kangana Ranaut had criticized Das earlier in the day for his remark that “Indian men revere women during the day and gang-rape them at night.”

Kangana wrote on her Instagram Story, ” “When you label all Indian men as gang-rapists, you’re encouraging racism and bullying against Indians all over the world…after the Bengal Famine, Winston Churchill famously said, “These Indians breed like rabbits, they’re bound to die like this…,” blaming Indians’ sex drive/fertility for the deaths of millions of people due to hunger… Soft terrorism is such brilliant work against an entire race… @virdas, severe steps must be done against such offenders.”

In response to the ongoing controversy, Vir Das issued an official statement on Twitter on Tuesday, urging people not to believe manipulated parts from the film and sharing his motivation for creating it. He penned, “A video I released on YouTube has gotten a lot of attention. The video is a satire on the duality of two very distinct Indias, each of which does things differently. Light and dark, good and evil, exist in every nation. Nothing here is a secret.”

“The video reminds us to never forget how magnificent we are.” Never lose sight of what makes us great. It all comes to a head with a massive patriotic round of applause for a country that we all love, believe in, and are proud of.

That there is a deeper beauty to our country than the headlines. “THAT IS THE POINT OF THE VIDEO, AND WHY THE APPLAUSE,” he continued.
