Nowadays, the face people think of when hearing the name Spider-Man is probably Tom Holland’s. However, it bears reminding that it was Tobey Maguire who first played Peter Parker, and a new fantastic Deepfake video has Maguire stepping in as MCU Spidey.
Of course, Maguire’s association with Spider-Man: No Way Home extends far beyond that, as both he and Andrew Garfield have been heavily rumored to appear in the movie as part of a Spider-Verse round-up that is already bringing back Alfred Molina, Jamie Foxx, and possibly Willem Dafoe. However, due to the direction and nature of Maguire’s own acting career after Spider-Man, his involvement might be a bit more complicated than it looks.
In any case, without having to rely on Marvel Studios’ magic to put Maguire in No Way Home, Deepfake master and Lucasfilm hiree Shamook dedicated himself to such a task and the result is actually quite impressive. Naturally, it helps that there’s so much footage of a younger Maguire playing Spider-Man or his other roles, but some shots like when Peter is addressing Doctor Strange on a first name basis look like something that was entirely acted out for real.
This isn’t the first time Shamook has tampered with the delicate balance of the Multiverse, as past examples of his work include putting Maguire in Far From Home, Holland in the first Spider-Man trilogy, or Maguire in The Amazing Spider-Man films, so overall this content creator is clearly Madame Web’s worst nightmare. Regardless of that, Shamook’s talents have also produced a few other spectacular crossovers like Robert Pattinson in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, so visiting his YouTube Channel always packs a lot of promise.
Luckily, there’s not a lot of waiting left until Marvel fans finally get to see for themselves if all the Spider-Verse rumors about No Way Home were true, or if instead, Doctor Strange’s role in the film could actually be bigger and thus cancel out the need for any Spider-Men crossover. Venom: Let There Be Carnage is also coming out very soon, which could also indicate what kind of plans Sony has to phase out Spider-Man from the MCU and make him their own leading man.
The calls for Maguire’s return in No Way Home have largely stemmed from the greater appreciation fans have started showing for Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy after so many years. To put it bluntly, Sony’s Spider-Man movies are and always will be the nexus event that kickstarted the superhero film genre of this day and age.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 17, 2021.
