Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin announced that his upcoming American fantasy series, House of the Dragon, has wrapped filming. The anticipated show is based on Martin’s 2018 novel, Fire & Blood, and is a prequel to the HBO hit, Game of Thrones.

House of the Dragon is set two hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones and narrates the downfall of House Targaryen, the events preceding the Targaryen civil war named the “Dance of the Dragons,” and the war itself. Formed by showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, Martin praised the cast and crew now that filming for the show has finally concluded.

In a cheerful post on his blog, titled Not a Blog, Martin expressed his excitement for the forthcoming series, writing, “Yes, all ten episodes. I have seen rough cuts of a few of them, and I’m loving them.” While admitting that the episodes still have some way to go in terms of the special effects and score, the novelist commended the creators for their efforts, saying, “the writing, the directing, the acting all look terrific. I hope you will like them as much as I do. My hat is off to Ryan and Miguel and their team, and to our amazing cast.” Evidently, this series is going to be one to remember, however, it appears fans can expect to wait a while longer for its release, as Martin hints at an uncertain premiere date, writing, “Lots of work remains to be done, as I said, and covid makes planning difficult. This spring? Unlikely. Maybe summer? Could be. Fall? Who knows?”

Nevertheless, this show seems set to provide plenty of entertainment for its audience. Creators Condal and Sapochnik previously won an Emmy for their work on Game of Thrones, and Martin is loving working closely with the duo on this project. In a blog post published on February 20, Martin shared a picture of himself surrounded by the cast and crew, stating, “You may not know their names now…but you should. Without them, there would be no show.”

House of the Dragon’s cast include Paddy Considine, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, Rhys Ifans and Steve Toussaint. The show was given a straight-to-series order in October 2019, with filming beginning in April 2021 and taking place primarily in the United Kingdom. Although Martin is not creating the script for this first season, the famed writer claims he has been in “constant contact” with Condal and contributed to giving the show its outline and shape, which was clear from the epic House of the Dragon teaser trailer released in October.

House of the Dragon is certain to create excitement, particularly for Game of Thrones fans who have yearned for a prequel ever since the ending of the show in 2019. Hopefully, people will not have to wait too long for the series’ release, however, according to Martin, the wait is worth it.
