Because both spin-off series have a shared love of dragons and strong individuals and because they both launched not long apart, viewers have been anticipating a competition between the two for weeks. Patrick McKay, the creator of the fantasy series Lord of the Rings, commented on how it differs from HBO’s prequel to Game of Thrones.
During a press conference for the Television Critics Association, he responded to a question regarding the competition between the two shows by saying, “We spoke extensively about this. When it does, we completely understand the question’s motivation.
“We don’t evaluate the program based on its genre or any other shows that are currently airing. We take Tolkien into account because he dedicated his entire life to creating this world. House of Dragon, which takes place 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, is centered on House Targaryen and the bloody civil war that breaks out between Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Prince Aegon II Targaryen.
The spin-off, which is anticipated to run for three to four seasons and be nearly half as long as the original program, is based on Game of Thrones author George RR Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood.
