The original Hollow Knight was released in 2017. It was a bigger hit than the developers at Team Cherry could have ever imagined. It is an Internet darling even amongst fans that don’t play games. That’s why the hype for the sequel, Hollow Knight Silksong, has been so highly anticipated since it was announced in 2019.
Originally the game was just going to be DLC. It has since blossomed into its own thing which is why it has taken so long. The wait will hopefully be worth it. Hollow Knight Silksong isn’t the only Metroidvania fans of the genre should be looking forward to in 2022. These seven other games may launch this year as well. Most of these should release across a wide array of platforms including the PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox One X.
8 Hollow Knight Silksong
What else is there to say about Hollow Knight Silksong? Every fan of the original already knows what to expect or at least they have expectations. Based on the trailers so far, the game looks similar in terms of exploration and combat.
The player character is new, Hornet, who did appear as a reoccurring guest in Hollow Knight. Hopefully, it launches in 2022 on PC and Switch. It’s been five years since the original launched and fans have been itching for more Metroidvania action ever since.
7 Metroid Prime 4
Metroid Prime 4 has been seemingly cooking for a long time now. It was announced in 2017, shortly after the release of the Switch which launched Nintendo fans into the sky with joy. All that was revealed was a title card. Then the project went dark before it was revealed that the original idea was scrapped and restarted in 2019.
That means it has been three years since this news broke. Nintendo still hasn’t shown one clip, piece of artwork, or any real details. It may launch in 2022. There is still hope. Metroid Dread was revealed and launched in the same year, 2021, and that proved to be a good strategy. Maybe the same will be true for Metroid Prime 4.
6 Salt And Sacrifice
Some may not know this but Salt and Sacrifice is a sequel and not a remaster. It is a bit confusing since the original is called Salt and Sanctuary. They also both look visually identical except the sequel is now in color. Keen observers will recognize more has evolved in this brutal action Metroidvania too.
No date other than 2022 was mentioned when it was revealed in 2021. The platforms were announced though. Look forward to this blend of Souls-like games, Metroidvanias, and co-op adventures when it launches on PC, PS4, and PS5.
5 Monster Tale
Monster Tale is a Metroidvania that was first released on the DS in 2011. In 2015 a 3DS remake was announced, Monster Tale Ultimater, but that was canceled. Then, in 2021, a remaster was announced but no gameplay was shown.
It was supposed to hit in the same year but it didn’t. It’s a real shame because it is one of the DS’ more underrated Metroidvanias and games overall. The kid-like design to everything may have thrown some people off along with the late release date. By that point, the DS was in its twilight years.
4 Souldiers
Souldiers is a fun name but also a hard one to look up online. This Metroidvania falls on the Castlevania side of things meaning it has more RPG elements. There are three classes: Scout, Archer, and Caster. Defeating enemies will gain players experience points.
Level up and learn new skills in an ever-expanding skill tree that is unique to each class. Characters will also learn elemental powers that can help unlock new paths. It is set to release sometime in Spring 2022 for PC and Switch.
3 Bushiden
Bushiden launched its Kickstarter in 2018. The initial launch plan was for 2020 as the main Kickstarter page indicates. However, the Steam page still lists it for 2021. Both dates are wrong but the team has been hard at work though.
They have been giving fairly regular updates on Kickstarter about this Metroidvania inspired by classic ninja games like Strider. It’s hard to say when this game will launch on PC, PS4, and Switch. Hopefully, the long wait will be worth it.
2 Gestalt Steam And Cinder
Gestalt Steam and Cinder was announced in 2020. It is another that adheres more to the RPG-heavy Castlevania side of things. The release date keeps changing on the Steam page but now it says 2022.
Since It has changed yearly, it’s hard to take any of these dates seriously. All fans of this upcoming Metroidvania can do is cross their fingers. Whenever the game launches, it will be available on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
1 Curse Of The Sea Rats
Curse of the Sea Rats also set up a Kickstarter in 2019. It was supposed to launch last year in 2021 but it looks like the developers missed their boat. This is a self-described “ratoidvania” which is a fun pun in that all four heroes are rats.
They started as human sailors but were changed in a brutal storm. What makes this Metroidvania unique is that it is a four-player co-op game. Not many Metroidvanias offer co-op of any kind so this is a huge deal. The game will launch on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox One X.
