Overwatch, like any other multiplayer title, has its fair share of toxic players. Fortunately, there are occasions where these rude teammates and enemies get their comeuppance, with a recent Overwatch image showing how some post-match cards called out a lying player.
In the lower ranks of Overwatch’s competitive play, there is a common belief that gold medals determine who played well and who was letting their team down. A regular excuse gamers have when disaster strikes and a match is lost is that they had several gold medals, so they could not possibly be to blame for what went wrong. While gold medals are a fine enough way to determine individual performance, they do not cover every aspect of the game, meaning gamers should never be judged on whether they have gold medals or not.
A post from Overwatch player and Reddit user Gent1c showcased a toxic player in action, utilizing the gold medal excuse as many have done before. N0rthwind, the team’s Winston, called out the Tracer player named Conor for not having any gold medals. According to the Winston, the Tracer should have every gold medal apart from healing since they were using a Damage hero. The Winston then added that they had received all the gold medals, a move to make themselves look better and make Conor look worse.
At first glance, this seems like the usual Overwatch toxicity players see every so often. However, as mentioned by the post title, Conor did not have to say anything in response to N0rthwind because the Winston was clearly lying. As seen on the third post-match card, it was actually the Moira player named Darroc that had four of the five gold medals, instantly disproving the Winston’s claim. Seeing the player caught in their lie is hilarious, and many were quick to upvote the post on Reddit for its hilarity.
One of the most interesting things about this Overwatch post is that the toxicity seems completely unnecessary. As seen in the top left corner, Conor and N0rthwind’s team was able to get the win on the Overwatch map Hanamura. As such, there is no need to criticize specific teammates for not playing well, as the team as a whole played good enough to get themselves the victory. The Winston player’s comments being so uncalled for makes the image even more satisfying, though, with many Redditors poking fun at the lying player and reinforcing the idea that gold medals do not matter as much as some gamers think they do.
Once Overwatch 2’s closed beta starts in April, there could be plenty more entertaining chat moments posted online. For those that like seeing toxic players called out, though, it will be tough to top this amazing post-match image.
Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
