Louisiana is transformed into a limitless world in season 1 of True Detective. Below sea level, there are deserted towns. Detectives Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson), who combat personal demons both on and off the field, have huge splotches of sweat that have grown on their backs due to the state’s high humidity. Then there are the bizarre elements of horror. The men find themselves involved in a lengthy investigation into a string of brutal murders. A murderer who believes in the Yellow King, a horrifying plot involving human sacrifice, and a wealthy, influential family trying their best to hide skeletons in the closet.
The titles that follow investigate the topics this season’s debut highlighted. An ex-cop is compelled to investigate disappearances that are related to a cult in The Empty Man (2020). In the strange films Blue Velvet (1986) and Under the Silver Lake (2018), which are set in the City of Angels and a tiny town respectively, debauchery and crime are uncovered. The police are anxious and perplexed in Memories of Murder (2003) as South Korea encounters the nation’s first known serial killer. These films may be able to fill the terrible void left by Rust and Marty. Additionally, a brand-new season of True Detective, starring Jodie Foster, is coming soon.
Blue Velvet (1986)
When his father has a heart attack, Jeffrey (Kyle MacLachlan) returns home. When Jeffrey returns to the charming community of Lumberton, he runs into the endearing Sandy (Laura Dern), and the two naturally become close. But the young man is not particularly thinking about love. Jeffrey becomes obsessed with trying to figure out how a severed ear got there. Despite the fact that it is a severed ear, Jeffrey doesn’t consider the possibility that it may be in a dangerous place. He is very tightly held in the clutch of the mystery.
It leads him to the charming Dorothy (Isabella Rossellini) and the gasping, rage-filled Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper). The beginning of the film by director David Lynch tells you everything that you need to know about the setting. A world of bugs lies below the baby blue sky, crimson roses, and white picket fence. Frank’s association with the Yellow Man, a dishonest detective, is a wonderful touch for this list. Lumberton’s cesspool of violent men may not be the Yellow King, but it only serves to enhance the terror of human monsters.
Seven (1995)
Detectives Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and Mills (Brad Pitt) are new partners who show up at the scene of a horrific murder in David Fincher’s modern-day classic, Seven. Somerset makes an effort to leave the case because he plans to retire in the next week. It is refuted. Working beside his irritable, younger partner is a need for the retiring, older detective. The killer’s pattern starts to emerge at that point. The crimes are carried out in the manner of the Seven Deadly Sins. The homicidal mastermind who meticulously planned out this week of horror is on the countdown with the detectives. Everybody they come upon has been damaged in a different way.
The city where the story takes place is described only as being rainy and crime-ridden. With all the buildings, alleyways, and bustling traffic, it might be any city. In comparison to Rust and Marty, Somerset and Mills are not as at odds with one another. They manage to achieve success in their collaboration, developing a respect for one another that finally turns into friendship. But the sad conclusion that follows has a lot to do with how they differ from one another.
Thesis (1996)
At a Madrid-based university, Angela (Ana Torrent) gets ready to begin her thesis project. She wants to learn more about violence because it fascinates her and is the subject of her thesis. In order to find more radical material in the university’s library, she seeks a professor for assistance. She approaches Chema (Fele Martnez), a classmate who she knows collects violent material, as a result of her fascination. The two discover an actual snuff film in this way, which doesn’t frighten them as much as it should. The two cooperate to find out more information on the crime they have on a VHS video, despite Chema’s roughness and intensity. It has a connection to the university that both of them go to. There continues to be a lot of death, however, there are no female victims. The urge for all things morbid in Angela’s life began with an early scene regarding death in a train station. Despite the fact that there is a killer, the movie seeks to make more damning statements. Violence is a topic that dominates media, particularly when it attacks women, in both movies and news.
Memories of Murder (2003)
The corpses of two women are discovered at the edges of a small town, apparently based on South Korea’s first serial killings. Due to inexperience and being overloaded, local detective Park Doo-man (Song Kang-ho) botches the investigation. His strategy is to have a partner beat the main suspect into making a confession. It’s not the proper guy, of course. Seo Tae-Yoon, a detective from Seoul, shows in to provide the much-needed professionalism and help. They argue early on over their vastly different approaches to working. There are many factors working against them, therefore they urgently need to come to an understanding. Due to a lack of DNA analysis technology in the country, the detectives are compelled to send evidence to the United States as they wait for a potential answer. Nevertheless, they are able to identify the killer’s preferred attack triggers and situations. Cloudy days are used by director Bong Joon Ho to heighten the mood. If only momentarily, the director’s brand of surreal humor can lighten the gloomy mood. Each rain sequence is filled with tension since it is believed that inclement weather is a prime moment for the killer to attack. The surroundings prove to be just as dangerous as the unidentified assailant.
Kill List (2011)
Former soldier Jay (Neil Maskell) now works as a hitman. Jay now has a new opportunity after some time has passed since a job that did not go well. He only needs to hit three balls out of the park. Together with their longtime friend Gal (Michael Smiley), the men quickly realize that nothing is as it seems. As more stakes are upped by unidentified employers, it follows people home. The film toys with viewers’ expectations by beginning as a slow burn about a man who is desperately attempting to maintain his mental health. When it is discovered that the three designated victims are linked, Jay is forced into a situation from which he would be unable to recover.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
The Swedish novel is adapted by David Fincher with a frigid precision that fits the setting. Journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) accepts a modest project that takes him to a remote island following a professional fallout. There, Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer) and other affluent Vanger family members reside. The elderly dad has devoted decades of effort to find the truth about his young niece’s abduction and has asked Blomkvist for his new perspective. Hacker Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara) is inexorably drawn in to assist Blomkvist in solving what turns out to be a string of unsolved crimes that Henrik’s niece was involved in.
Prisoners (2013)
Prisoners by Denis Villeneuve is the tragic and twisted tale of two young girls who vanish on Thanksgiving night. Although the main suspect is apprehended, the case is not that straightforward. Detective Loki (Jacob Gyllenhaal) and Keller, the father of one of the girls, are committed to finding the kidnapped people (Hugh Jackman). While Loki dives into the case and approaches it professionally, Keller decides to take action rather than wait. The distraught father searches for the kidnapper, or whoever he thinks it is and discovers that he is quite capable of doing a lot in order to get answers. The movie is as drab as the environment in the early winter because of messy character flaws.
Under the Silver Lake (2018)
When Sam (Andrew Garfield), who is aimless and about to be evicted, sees Sarah (Riley Keough), he believes that his life has improved. He is immediately engrossed in her. The next day, she disappears without a trace. Sam makes Sarah into a riddle to be solved because he enjoys conspiracy and secret messages in popular culture. He moves forward with a sense of purpose that he hasn’t had in a while. Sam is taken throughout Los Angeles as a mysterious scheme comes to light. The lengthy running duration is in keeping with the elaborate scheme the protagonist tries to uncover.
The Empty Man (2020)
James Lasombra (James Badge Dale), an ex-cop who is mourning the loss of his family, resides in a small Missouri town. He involves himself in the search for a neighbor’s missing daughter to further complicate matters. The only thing remaining is a message from the youth referring to “the Empty Man.” Soon, inexplicable deaths start to happen and seem to be suicides. Lasombra makes the decision to investigate after learning of an urban legend. According to legend, the mythical creature might perhaps hear if someone blows into a bottle while standing on a bridge.
