J.K. Rowling, the author of ‘Harry Potter,’ has reacted to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s remark about the West’s ‘cancel-culture,’ which attempts to limit freedom of expression, according to ‘Deadline.’
Several large Western firms stationed in Russia have cancelled their action plans and big-ticket launches in Russia in recent days as a result of the Putin administration’s invasion of Ukraine. In a televised discussion, Putin linked the cancellation of Russian cultural events to Nazi Germany’s activities.
He stated, “Today, they (Western nations) are attempting to nullify a thousand-year-old country, our people. I’m referring to the growing prejudice against everything remotely related to Russia, which is taking place in a number of Western countries with the full knowledge and sometimes support of the ruling elites. The infamous cancel culture has evolved into cancellation of culture.”
According to ‘Deadline,’ he then compared the treatment of Russian cultural figures to Rowling’s ostracism for her perceived anti-transgender views, saying, “Not so long ago, they cancelled a children’s writer, Joanne Rowling, because she, the author of books sold in hundreds of millions of copies around the world, failed to please the supporters of so-called gender liberties.”
