According to data from Statcounter, Huawei has, over the past year, been holding steady at about 10% of the global Mobile Vendor Market Share, trailing behind Korean tech giant Samsung at about 31% and Apple at 25% market share.
This is rather impressive, especially seeing as Huawei’s sales outside of China have been greatly handicapped owing to the ongoing tension between the Chinese tech giant and the U.S.
One of the biggest bones of contentions has resulted in Huawei devices shipping without Google Play services, a huge hamartia for users outside China.
This has since led to Huawei questioning its over-reliance on US tech giant, Google, and the Android platform. With that, Huawei has been working on its in-house operating system to replace Android as its platform of choice.
HongMeng OS, or Harmony OS, is Huawei’s attempt at building its own platform from scratch. Huawei is a huge company and if anyone is able to pull this off, it might as well be this industry titan. So what is the progress so far? Well, in this tracker, we shall be looking at the key milestones in the development of Harmony OS 2.0.
We already know that Harmony OS 2.0 is coming in 2021 and we’ve since seen reports that it could be coming to even more platforms.

Update 1 (September 10)
This website allows users and developers to download the open-source code for Hongmeng OS. This can be done using one of the following methods.
IST: 10:30 am: At Huawei Developer Conference (HDC) 2020 on September 11, it has been announced that Hongmeng OS is already available across more than 20 product categories. Cumulatively, these account for 12 million third-party products.
Update 2 (September 11)
Further, the company estimates that this number is expected to exceed 100 million by end of 2020. Ambitious, but if this is true, then Hongmeng OS might already have a viable userbase and this could form the foundation for all future HongMeng OS ventures.

IST: 12:30 pm: In an interview following the Huawei Developer Conference held on September 11 in China, Yang Haisong, Vice President of Huawei’s Software Department announced that Hongmeng OS requires as little as 128kB of RAM to operate.
IST: 12:40 pm: In a video that can only be described as a demonstration or proof of concept, a Huawei watch is shown on a circuit-board running what is said to be Hongmeng OS.
What do you think about this? Also, reports have it that this watch could be launched as soon as this year.
IST: 1:50 pm: At HDC 2020, Huawei says that it will incorporate Android 11 features into EMUI 11. Additionally, the company says that it will enable users of EMUI 11 to update to Harmony OS. This, despite Harmony OS being fundamentally different from Android.
It remains unclear how this will be achieved. It is also not known whether all EMUI 11 devices will be eligible for this or only a select few.
Huawei is set to announce smartphone support for Harmony OS later this year with plans to roll out devices running this new operating system in 2021.
Update 3 (September 13)
The company, through its cross-device collaboration capability, projects that HarmonyOS 2.0 will be the future of smartphones, owing to its fundamental superiority over Android. Here’s more.
New reports indicate that Huawei is bringing in Russian engineers to help fast-track the development of HarmonyOS. This is in line with the company’s plans to release a Harmony OS Beta build for smartphones later this year and an official launch later in 2021.
Update 4 (September 16)
It is being reported that the user interface on HarmonyOS 2.0 for Honor Smart TVs is expected to roll out in December of this year. This is expected to bring a number of features from the mobile division of Harmony OS.
Update 5 (September 17)
It is being reported that the Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro will be the first smartwatch to launch equipped with the Hongmeng OS. The device is set to launch in China soon and it will spot wireless charging and luxury design.
Update 6 (September 18)
In a classic no-man-is-an-island move, Huawei has announced that it plans to open up Huawei Mobile Services and HarmonyOS to rival manufacturers.

Will HarmonyOS 2.0 be compelling enough for Android OEMs to switch camps? All we can do is wait and see.
05:16 pm (IST): A recent report suggests that Huawei is planning to upgrade its smartphones to Harmony OS fully by next year. Thus, the company would only release Harmony OS powered devices thereafter.
Update 8 (September 26)
05:54 pm (IST): Reportedly, Huawei is set to release the Harmony OS 2.0 for developers by the end of this year, whereas, the public beta should go live in February 2021 for certain devices, most probably the devices from the P40 series.
Update 9 (September 28)
05:01 pm (IST): New details have surfaced suggesting that HarmonyOS will first become available for Huawei phones with the Kirin 9000 5G SoC. Devices powered by the Kirin 990 5G will be part of the second batch.
Update 10 (October 05)
Devices with the Kirin 990 4G, Kirin 985, Kirin 820 will be part of the third batch. Following which, Kirin 820 and Kirin 980 powered devices will get it. Finally, Kirin 810 and Kirin 710 devices will be part of the last batch.
04:39 pm (IST): While the initial list of devices that will support HarmonyOS did not include models with older chipsets, a new report (in Chinese) suggests that there are chances that devices with the Kirin 970 chipset such as the Huawei Mate 10 series and P20 series may also support HarmonyOS.
Update 11 (October 07)
06:15 pm (IST): According to a report (in Chinese), EMUI 11 and HongMeng OS share a lot in common such as the performance, system scheduling, and more. Therefore, it hints that EMUI 11 might be the last Android-based update for Huawei phones.
Update 12 (October 29)
03:53 pm (IST): Huawei is reportedly scheduled to release a beta version of HarmonyOS for some smartphones on December 18 in China. This release will target developers in order to give time time to develop and optimize their apps for the OS.
Update 13 (November 09)
04:35 pm (IST): Midea, the Chinese electrical appliance manufacturer, has released a bunch of new smart home products today that are powered by HarmonyOS. These products range from water heaters, dishwashers, smart stoves, and others as per a new report.

06:13 pm (IST): Huawei has released the HarmonyOS 2.0 update beta update for a handful of phones and a tablet. These are the Huawei P40, Huawei P40 Pro, Huawei Mate 30, Huawei Mate 30 Pro, and the Huawei MatePad Pro.

12:54 pm (IST): As per recent reports, HarmonyOS 2.0 (HongMeng OS 2.0) will incorporate a new user interface. It is, however, unclear how different it will be from the current HarmonyOS interface.

05:35 pm (IST): According to a recent report, Huawei Harmony OS 2.0 might still be based on Android. The info comes from a developer who tested a simple app targeted for an older Android version on the first Harmony OS 2.0 beta. Find out more details here.
10:55 am (IST): In a recent keynote speech, Wang Chenglu, the president of Huawei’s Consumer Business software division put forward that Hongmeng OS is not an alternative system that’s being developed to respond to the US sanctions. They added that Hongmeng OS is not a copy of Android or iOS.
Update 25 (January 12, 2021)
The company in fact aims to use the Hongmeng OS to solve the IoT hardware equipment problems, and aims to equip 300-400 million units with the OS during this year.
09:40 am (IST): Huawei is reportedly seeding the HarmonyOS 2.0 beta to the Huawei P30 and Mate 30 Pro 5G in China. New developments also indicate that it isn’t based on Android, as it was suspected earlier.

06:40 pm (IST): In yet another twist, Ron Amadeo, from Ars Technica has confirmed that there’s not much of a difference between HarmonyOS and Android after all. As per details shared in the article, HarmonyOS is basically “Android 10 with no discernible changes.”

While there’s nothing wrong with this, it’s clearly not in line with Huawei’s marketing of HarmonyOS claiming that it’s an all new OS.
10:05 am (IST): Huawei has released the DevEco Device Tool 2.0 Beta 1 that brings a bunch of new features including support for Ubuntu. The tool is essential for developers looking to create apps for HarmonyOS 2.0.

10:09 am (IST): Huawei may kick-start the HarmonyOS mobile beta testing from this month itself according to a tipster — Changan Digital King — on Weibo. The initial testing will involve a limited number of users and will be expanded in March.
– The new Ubuntu system version supports functions such as project creation, source code pull, one-click compilation, burning, and debugging, providing a one-stop development experience.
– Added support for the programming function of tripartite development boards, including XNP, Realtek and Xradio series development boards.
– With the addition of HDF function, developers can manage and add device drivers through the HDF function of DevEcoDevice Tool, and generate information such as driver directory structure, driver templates, codes, and header files with one click.
– Added HPM function, integrated HPM instruction set, developers can directly obtain the components of related solutions through DevEcoDevice Tool.
– Optimize the development environment preparation process, no need to manually install and set up JDK, Jlink, OpenOCD and other tools and npm components, reducing the complexity of environment construction.
– Adapt to each development board, provide a default configuration scheme, and complete one-click compilation and burning without modification.

After this closed beta testing ends, the company will open up the testing to a wider audience. However, the OEM has still not divulged any specific details on the availability of HarmonyOS for the general public. (Via)

10:05 am (IST): The EMUI 11.1 skin will apparently be based on HarmonyOS and will begin rolling out to the Huawei Mate 40 series, P40 series, Nova 8 series, and Nova 7 series in March.

11:05 am (IST): Huawei has officially announced that it will release its HarmonyOS update for eligible devices starting from April. The Mate X2 will be part of the first batch of devices to get the company’s new in-house OS.

12:22 pm (IST): Huawei has begun rolling out the HarmonyOS 2.0 update for the Smart Screen X65. The new firmware brings support for China Ultra HD Video Industry Alliance (CUVA) HDR Vivid dynamic display as per a new report.

11:45 am (IST): In a recent interview, Wang Chenglu, President of Huawei’s consumer business software department, claimed that some people in the tech space have insufficient understanding of open-source software when questioned about whether or not HarmonyOS is a copy of Android.

06:40 pm (IST): A fresh report suggests that Huawei might be planning to release HarmonyOS to devices with processors such as the Kirin 810, Kirin 820, Kirin 820E, Kirin 980, Kirin 990, Kirin 985, and Kirin 9000.
So any device with a processor above the Kirin 710 could be eligible for the update to HarmonyOS.
06:15 pm (IST): A fresh leak on Weibo suggests that HarmonyOS would be replacing EMUI 11 on a few Huawei devices starting from April. The first batch of devices to get the update will be these:

There are also some features from iOS 14 that have been adopted on the new OS. The brand is also looking to expand HarmonyOS 2.0 to support Qualcomm and MediaTek processors.

Huawei is gearing up for the HarmonyOS System Ecological Partner Summit – HarmonyOS Connect in China on May 18. Huawei Watch 3 based on HarmonyOS 2.0 also gets WiFi certification that suggests imminent launch.

04:15 pm (IST): Huawei is ready to let third-party OEMs to use HarmonyOS 2.0. The mass scale release of this operating system to Huawei devices is set to begin in June.
Huawei says HarmonyOS 2.0 is only 1% and there’s a lot that can be done by other players in the industry. In short, this seems like a base for something big to come in the future.
The company has also merged Huawei HiLink and Power by HarmonyOS to call them HarmonyOS Connect from now. Huawei will be launching HarmonyOS Connect Zone for all malls soon.
