The recent release of Halo Infinite has catapulted Master Chief back into the public consciousness, in the best of ways. Some were worried about the game after its showcase last year, but with all the innovations, the solid campaign, the surprise multiplayer drop, and the speed at which fan requests have made it into Halo Infinite’s multiplayer has not gone unnoticed by fans.
Still, Halo Infinite is held to a high standard and a higher level of scrutiny, meaning every choice is examined under a microscope. This includes Halo Infinite’s recent addition of cat ears, which has split the fanbase.
Some Players Hate Halo Infinite’s Cat Ears
First, it should be noted that, as a cosmetic, cat ears are pretty standard fare. They are often associated with gaming directly, not just through anime and stuff like that. Still, some are not happy about the cat ears in Halo Infinite. This is a direct byproduct of Halo Infinite’s number one complaint outside the initial progression qualms, the cosmetic microtransactions as a result of the multiplayer’s free-to-play approach. Although common nowadays, as it generates more revenue for games than a base price, it can still be taken too far. Cat ears, as it seems, are the point by which some are split if Halo Infinite skins and cosmetics will go too far.
Slippery slope logic aside, some think this is also a venture away from the core aspects of Halo. Some believe Halo will turn into Fortnite or Apex Legends, while some think that cosmetics before missing game components (especially when purchased) isn’t the right way to go about the game’s ongoing support. It should be noted that these are often led by different teams.
Some Think Halo Infinite’s Cat Ears Are Fun
Despite this split, many are enjoying the cat ears as a little bit of fun injected into the typically-serious Halo Infinite world. Again, it’s a common gaming aspect—not something too far outside the gaming realm, as far as many are concerned. Both sides seem to agree that the Halo Infinite cosmetic price is a bit steep, but that’s not stopping many from enjoying the hilarity of a Halo Infinite squad with cat ears.
It remains to be seen how far this goes, but at the end of the day, Halo Infinite is a free-to-play multiplayer game. The campaign itself might as well be free given it’s on Xbox Game Pass. As such, monetization via cosmetics isn’t going anywhere any time soon. Whether Halo Infinite gets a bit out there with skins like Fortnite or whether this dies down as nothing major remains to be seen.
